American streets to glow with LED lights
New York City could soon be glowing with street lights made from LED technology.
Following a competition, the Office for Visual Interaction (OVI) is set to construct up to six different LED prototypes of streetlights which could then be used to light-up the Big Apple.
The OVI will work with the Lighting Science Group (LSG) to build the prototypes in a £650,000 contract.
Govi Rao, chairman of LSG, revealed that the LED prototypes are kinder to the environment than traditional sodium technology.
"Lighting Science is honoured to be part of New York City's project to test long-lasting, eco-friendly lights to illuminate our world-renowned streets and boroughs."
No details have yet been released regarding which boroughs the lights will be showcased in but, if successful, it is hoped they will be used globally.
Enrique Peiniger, principal of OVI, said: "The new streetlight is the first of its kind and will set the new standard of lighting for city streets worldwide."
Other projects the OVI is currently working on include lighting of an air force memorial and the New York Times building.
