Library search offers LED screen potential
A worldwide search is now underway for an 'inspirational' architect to design a new multi-million pound library in the Midlands.
Birmingham City Council has advertised for a globally renowned architect to come forward with ideas for the new £193 million Library of Birmingham.
Set to be constructed in the city's Centenary Square, the library and Birmingham's Repertory Theatre are to share the building's new facilities, which include bars, cafes and a new 350-seat auditorium.
Depending on the chosen architect's designs, the building could offer plenty of scope for high-tech signage systems and LED screens to be installed, once it is completed in 2013.
"It's our belief that a landmark building deserves an inspirational design," leader of Birmingham City Council, Mike Whitby, said.
"By working with the very best international architects we will develop a building which will not only be highly accessible, sustainable and functional for visitors, but will also become known as a global landmark synonymous with cultural excellence and the city of Birmingham," he added.
Architects have a deadline of March 3rd to submit details of their credentials and experience before designs are considered.
