Lift shafts given LEDs for art installation

A London lift shaft becomes a work of art at night due to the installation of LED lighting.

Designer Tom Sloan, from Jason Bruges Studio, recently revealed that he decided against lighting up the entire building in LEDs and instead went for a more subtle approach.

Broadwick House, in Westminster, has had LED lights fixed into its lift shaft in addition to a sensor that remembers every stop the lift made during the day.

When night falls the sensor activates the LEDs which light-up and play out all the lift's stops for the public to see.

"We didn't want to light the whole building as that would have been a waste of energy. So we created a piece of theatre in the lift. It's about subtle intervention, not blazing lights," he told Building Design.

"It's driven by real information which adds a character to it that feels alive. It takes as much information as it's given and just pumps it back."

Last year, Jason Bruges Studio designed an art installation at London's Southbank Centre which combined wind turbines and LED lighting.
