LED research project gains financial boost

The UK has pledged £15 million towards the development of energy-efficient lighting and laser technology

LED research and development will benefit from the initiative, which aims
to help Britain achieve its climate change goals.

Included in the funding is money set aside for the Enhanced Display Viewability using High Efficiency Advanced LED Backlight Arrays (ENDVIEW) project, which applies high performance LED arrays to lighting displays.

The LED lighting for the 21st Century [LL21C] project will also benefit.

Technology Strategy Board's chief executive, Iain Gray, said the government was committed to encouraging the development of laser and light technologies.

He added: "Major investment in innovative research and development, by the private and public sectors working together, such as the fifteen million pounds announced today, will enable us to develop world-leading technologies that have global market potential."

Other projects to receive funding include the Advanced White Light Fibre Laser and Applications in Medical Imaging (WhiteLase) initiative and the Low Cost Holographic Optical Elements for Next Generation Lighting Systems, NAHO (Nano Aligned Holographic Optics).

New LED scoreboard for Dallas Cowboys

A giant 180-foot-long digital scoreboard is being assembled at the new Dallas Cowboys stadium in Arlington, USA.

The high definition Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Vision LED scoreboard will hang directly over the surface of the pitch.

It will stretch from one 20-yard line to the other and is set to be the largest LED high-definition video display in the world.

The construction consists of four video displays, two main sideline displays (72 feet high by 160 feet wide) and two end-zone LED displays (29 feet high by 51 feet wide).

Construction manager Jack Hill told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram: "They'll assemble the scoreboard on the ground, and then with jacks they'll jack it up in the air, and it will dead-hang about 90 feet off the surface of the field."
