LED display screens useful in emergencies

LED display screens useful in emergencies Virginia Tech, a university in the USA, has installed state-of-the-art LED display screens in its classrooms as part of its multi-channel emergency response notification system.

The LED display screens will join other notification systems, like the university's website and voicemail system, reports CollegiateTimes.com.

"Anything that improves campus security as an issue has to be positive," Larry Hincker, the vice president of university relations, told the website.

"Many professors don't normally allow students to have their cell phones on in class and get email.

"This is a way to say there is a winter storm coming and the university is going to be closed."

Virginia Tech is the first university in the USA to implement the displays.

Each screen normally costs $1,495 (£810) but because of the quantities involved the whole project, including installation, cost the university $243,000 (£131,681).

The website added that various other universities in Virginia, Illinois and Washington are experimenting with the technology.
