University joins LED light programme
Another US university has joined a special programme which hopes to increase the use of LED lighting across the country.
The LED University Program is encouraging academic organisations to convert to LED lighting because it is more energy efficient.
Recently the University of Notre Dame, in Indiana, converted some of its buildings to the innovative technology in order to reduce energy bills.
LED lights have been installed in the university's conference rooms and library in addition to external lighting.
James Mazurek, director of sustainability at the university, stated that converting the lighting would have a large impact on the campus's running costs.
"Addressing energy and maintenance costs for campus lighting is one of the most effective ways we can reduce energy use, achieve our sustainability targets, and save money," he said.
"On average, Americans use 22 percent of energy for lighting, so it makes sense to target lighting."
There are approximately six other US universities currently taking part in the programme.
