LED chip factory opens
Osram has officially opened the last section of its new plant in Germany.
Taking seven years to build, the new section increases current capacity at the Regensburg factory by 50 per cent, LEDs Magazine reports.
Osram's chief executive Martin Goetzeler and chief executive of Osram Opto Semiconductors Radiger Maller attended the opening with Hans Schaidinger, Regensburg's mayor.
The extension to the plant now brings its area to around 600,000 square feet.
Commenting on the importance of the company's expansion, Mr Goetzeler said that the technology has a bright future and the firm predicted major growth as a result.
"LEDs are the light sources of the future so we have every intention of expanding in this field, which is why we have invested heavily in expanding the sites in Regensburg and Penang," he said.
The opto-semiconductor sector is expected to witness strong market growth in the next few years.
Products based on this technology currently account for 12 per cent of Osram's total sales.
