LED research project gains financial boost

The UK has pledged £15 million towards the development of energy-efficient lighting and laser technology

LED research and development will benefit from the initiative, which aims
to help Britain achieve its climate change goals.

Included in the funding is money set aside for the Enhanced Display Viewability using High Efficiency Advanced LED Backlight Arrays (ENDVIEW) project, which applies high performance LED arrays to lighting displays.

The LED lighting for the 21st Century [LL21C] project will also benefit.

Technology Strategy Board's chief executive, Iain Gray, said the government was committed to encouraging the development of laser and light technologies.

He added: "Major investment in innovative research and development, by the private and public sectors working together, such as the fifteen million pounds announced today, will enable us to develop world-leading technologies that have global market potential."

Other projects to receive funding include the Advanced White Light Fibre Laser and Applications in Medical Imaging (WhiteLase) initiative and the Low Cost Holographic Optical Elements for Next Generation Lighting Systems, NAHO (Nano Aligned Holographic Optics).
