Growth in LED market expected as uses expand beyond LED displays
LEDs are expected to be used more and more in the next few years, branching out from conventional uses like LED displays, according to a market research firm.
The Darnell Group believe the LED market will go 'full circle', from the use of LED displays in handsets to their use in larger platforms.
This should force the cost of LEDs down until they become cost-effective for general illumination, replacing traditional light sources.
As evidence, Darnell pointed to an announcement for the US Department of Energy (DOE) which predicted a significant upswing in the market for LED lighting in the next five years, with widespread adoption in 20, but Darnell predict even this is pessimistic.
"We analyzed over 50 application sub-segments in detail to arrive at our growth trajectories," said Darnell's president, Jeff Shepard.
"Growth is accelerating in numerous market segments including video signs and billboards, automotive lighting, and others."
He added: "Growth in these applications will drive down the cost of LEDs faster than anticipated by the DOE."
Darnell's predictions are outline in their report LED Driver ICs: Application Drivers, Technology Developments & Product Introduction Trends.
