LED streetlamp project launched in China
The first and so far most successful of China's Special Economic Zones has embraced the use of LED street lamps in its high-tech industrial park.
LED lamps will initially be installed along one of the roads in the park in the city of Shenzhen, with a view to being rolled out across the entire site.
Shenzhen SED will be making the lamps, which will use LEDs made by the German company OSRAM.
Around 80 per cent less electricity is used with the LED lamps compared with the incandescence variety which is why the Chinese government - known to want to make the country more energy-efficient has encouraged their use.
"We consider this project with Shenzhen SED to be an exciting milestone towards making more cost and energy-effective lighting a reality in mainland China," said CEO of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Asia Dr Alfred Felder.
The Chinese government's actions reflect a wider trend as leaders around the world try to work out how to make their countries more energy efficient.
With oil prices still rising now at $142 a barrel they know that the quicker they can become efficient the better it will be for their economies.
