Samsung invests in new LED display technology
Samsung has today said it is increasing production of a new type of LED display six-fold spending nearly $550 million according to Reuters.
The new technology - active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AM-OLED) display - is being heralded as a future replacement for liquid crystal displays (LCDs).
AM-OLED displays are said to be slimmer and more efficient than LCDs, but also of a higher quality.
Other big players in the electronics market have been upping stakes in AM-OLED production, with both Sony and Toshiba releasing OLED products.
While OLED displays have several advantages over LCDs, they have not been immune to criticism.
The lifetime of displays using OLED technology is said to be significantly less than that of LCDs.
The problem arises as the organic compounds particularly those that emit blue light - in the display degrade due to oxygen and water particles penetrating the screen.
However a plastic film developed recently in Singapore may be able to protect the screen from particles and so increase its longevity.
