Universities save money with environmentally friendly LED illumination
Five universities have signed up for a new pilot scheme that will see them install and evaluate the benefits of LED illumination.
North Carolina State University (NCSU), Marquette University, University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB), University of Arkansas and China's Tianjin Polytechnic University will all examine the financial and environmental incentives for expanding rollout of the lighting system.
The scheme will see LED lighting fitted in various areas across the five campuses, partly to improve security.
UCSB has already installed 23 LED streetlights and notes they require 44 per cent less energy than traditional alternatives. Tianjin Polytechnic University fitted 1,500 LED lights earlier this year while the University of Arkansas plans to purchase 1,700 recessed lamps.
Marquette University intends to deliver both recessed and task illumination while NCSU has installed can lighting.
James Oblinger, chancellor of NCSU, said: "Part of our mission is to develop and implement real-world solutions that have global impact.
"By joining the LED University initiative, we are making a long-term investment in an energy efficient future."
