LEDs to light up Trafalgar Square
LEDs will light up one of London's most famous landmarks this autumn.
The Greater London Authority has announced it is seeking a contractor to replace current lighting systems in Trafalgar Square's fountains with a new LED lighting system, LEDs Magazine reports.
Currently, the two fountains are fitted with 28 individual waterproof luminaries with 250-watt halogen lamps.
The replacement work, which will be finished by November, will include installing new colour LED luminaries, cabling and electrical distribution as well as a lighting control system.
Visited by up to 13 million people per year, Trafalgar Square is dominated by the 184ft high Nelson's Column as well as the pair of grade-two listed fountains first installed in 1844.
The existing lighting system, which was installed in 1992, will be replaced with a system that is more environmentally friendly.
It is hoped that the new lighting, which will include coloured lights and sequencing for special events, will reduce the square's carbon footprint by as much as 16,400kg of carbon dioxide per year.
