Times Square crystal ball installed with LED lights

Times Square crystal ball installed with LED lights Times Square will soon feature a massive New Year's Eve ball lit-up with LED lights.

The specially-designed ball measures 12-feet across and weighs a staggering six tonnes.

However, visitors to the famous square do not have to wait until News Year's Eve to see the ball which is traditionally only lit-up on that evening.

Instead the construction will be erected this week and be kept alight in the square all-year round.

Up to 2,468 Waterford crystal triangles make-up the ball with each one being lit by 12 LED lights.

Jeff Straus, president of Countdown Entertainment, revealed that visitors are welcome to come and see the ball throughout the year.

"You won't have to be here on December 31st anymore to see the Times Square ball," he said.

"You can come any time now and it will be up there like a jewel, every day and we expect to have special programming for special days."

The LED lights will beam images, such as an American flag, around the area on the last night of the year.

Traditionally the Times Square ball descends 23 metres down a pole at midnight to welcome in the new year.
