North Walsham to get new hospital

North Walsham to get new hospital Health chiefs have backed a new £8 million hospital for North Walsham in Norfolk.

However, a timescale for the project is currently unclear as details have not yet been drawn up, reports EDP24.

A new 24-bed complex is to be built for the former Rebecca House mental care unit and a new joint GP surgery is planned to replace the two existing ones.

The hospital will not be relocated to the Lawns site though, as there were problems with planning permission and potential for increased traffic congestion.

Mayor of North Walsham, Brian Wexler, was quoted as saying that the plan "sounds like a good idea".

He thought those that opposed the closure of the old hospital would change their minds when they saw a report calling it unsuitable due to its lack of space and privacy.

It is to be demolished when the new hospital is completed.

A £1.2 million health centre for Aylsham was also approved which could offer services like baby massage, weight management help and quit-smoking groups.

The centre may be up and running by December 2009.
