Esquire to feature electronic display on cover
The US magazine Esquire is to publish a special edition which will come complete with an electronic display on the front cover.
Around 100,000 of the 720,000 magazines published will have the special front cover, which will flash the words 'The 21st Century Begins Now'.
While the production cost is expected to be far higher than that of a normal edition, the extra cost will not be paid for by consumers, with an advert by Ford on the inside cover helping to cover it.
The move was an attempt to innovate and an industry that Esquire felt had not seen innovation in a long time.
"Magazines have basically looked the same for 150 years," David Granger, the magazine's editor-in-chief, told the New York Times.
"We are trying to combine a 21st-century technology with a 19th-century manufacturing process."
The electronic display is also featuring as part of the magazine's 75th anniversary.
It has not been announced if UK readers will be able to get a copy of the special edition.
