Tesco introduces LED lighting
Tesco has announced that 111 of its supermarkets located in Ireland are to introduce LED lighting.
The retailer is to install LED lights into the freezer areas in a £800,000 contract with supplier Nualight.
Tesco is expected to save approximately £197,000 per year in energy bills by using LED lights in its freezers rather than traditional fluorescent bulbs.
Maintenance bills will also be reduced as the innovative technology lasts longer than conventional lighting.
Michael McNerney, energy manager at Tesco Ireland, stated that LED lighting is helping the company become greener.
"We were pleased with the significant cost savings and enhanced product illumination offered by LEDs," he said.
"Tesco is committed to cutting its carbon footprint in every area of its business and aims to halve energy use by 2009. This LED initiative helps us achieve this important goal."
Sainsbury's recently installed LED lights into the freezer areas of 350 of its stores.
