Donation funds new high school scoreboard
A new state-of-the-art scoreboard with "all the bells and whistles" is set to be installed by Swampscott High School.
A generous donation by the class of 1950 is expected to help the school purchase a $7,500 electronic display for the baseball diamond on Forest Avenue.
Alan Shactman, a former hockey team captain and baseball centerfielder, led the fundraising efforts.
He said: "Our class is the only class in the history of school to give a scholarship every year since we graduated.
"I was walking around the field and noticed a scoreboard.
"My heart dropped then I found out it didn't work and they needed a new one."
The new screen will ensure supporters are kept up to date by offering the latest batting and innings statistics.
Department of Public Works director Gino Cresta welcomed the decision to support the project, which he described as "a worthy endeavour".
