Tom's name on sports scoreboard as Euro record breaker
Diving star Tom Daley's name was top of the sports scoreboard on Sunday night as he became the youngest European diving champion on record.
The 13-year-old brought the gold medal home for Great Britain at the European Championships in Eindhoven outperforming more experienced divers.
The Plymouth teenager was an average of nine years younger than his fellow competitors in the ten-metre platform final.
"It's amazing to be European champion ahead of that kind of field," Daley told the Times. "It's totally unexpected. It's thrilling, like being on a theme-park ride."
But the youngster, who has secured his place in the diving team in this summer's Beijing Olympics, is determined not to let success go to his head.
Speaking to the BBC, he said that while he would enjoy Beijing his main priority was winning a medal closer to home.
"I'm not expecting a medal in Beijing, I've just got to get ready for London 2012," he said.
Prior to Daley's talent, Great Britain's youngest diver was Brian Phelps who at the age of 14 years and 134 days became European Champion in the ten metre platform diving in 1958.
