BMW tests LED headlights
LED technology has this week been tested in a BMW race car.
LED lights were fitted to a car and trialled at the Silverstone race track by the BMW racing team.
Among the benefits thought to come from the use of LED lights is greater energy efficiency.
Dick Bennetts, managing director for West Surrey Racing, explained that the LEDs showed improvements in "performance, colour quality and reduced power consumption".
Meanwhile, Tim Reynolds, chief executive officer of Ceravision Technology, added: "The headlights showed significantly lower energy usage than that of current headlamps or the projected savings from future LED lights."
Ceravision claims the development offers a "revolutionary, high quality, low-cost lighting system".
Last month Koito, the largest car lighting manufacturer in Japan, revealed it will develop LED headlights in 2009, while car giant Audi has confirmed it will use LED lights as a new feature.
