City traffic signals updated with LED lights
A Lincolnshire city is to get LED traffic signals in a bid to boost the safety of its roads.
The Canwick Road area of Lincoln is currently being installed with LED lights in traffic signals which help direct vehicles into lanes.
At present, arrows are lit-up on signs using halogen lamps but these are being replaced in a move which is expected to improve road safety.
Mike Nicholls, principal engineer for traffic signals, explained that LED lighting will be more reliable than traditional technology.
In addition, less power is used by the lighting so energy bills are likely to be reduced.
"When the lamps fail this can lead to the centre lane automatically closing down due to the safety protocols designed into the system," he said.
"We are therefore acting now to implement new LED-based technology, which will have the added benefits of longer life and fewer failures."
Figures from Business Magnet reveal that the average LED light can last for a staggering 50,000 hours.
