LED screens set for Indian railways

LED screens set for Indian railways India's rail network is to benefit from the installation of new LED display boards across the country, it has emerged.

Trains, railways stations and car parks will receive the technology which will improve the display of customer information and make journeys easier, the Hindu Times reports.

The measures, announced in the railway budget this week, also include online coach indication display boards on night mail and express trains which will be in place by March 2009.

Lalu Prasad, federal railways minister, said the boards would show relevant information such as the distance and time of arrival as well as the next station clearly to travellers.

"On board passengers are generally unaware of the timely running and likely arrival of approaching stations whereas this information is available on screen on international flights," he explained.

"This is a particular source of inconvenience to passengers de-boarding the train at night time," he added.

The Indian railway network is one of the largest in the world with around 7,000 stations transporting an estimated 16 million people annually.
